Nanjangud-KGudi-Bandipur

Nanjangud (Kannada ನಂಜನಗೂಡು) is a town in Mysore district in the Indian state of Karnataka. It is a temple town and is on the banks of the river Kapila (Kabini), and lies at a distance of 23 km from the city of Mysore. Nanjangud is also called as "Dakshina Kashi" (southern Kashi).

The main temple at Nanjangud is dedicated to the Hindu God Shiva, also called Nanjundeshwara, "The God who drank poison". In Hindu mythology, the Gods and demons churned the ocean in search of the ambrosia. During this churning, poison emanated first, followed by ambrosia. To prevent the poison from spreading across the universe and to destroy it, Shiva came to the rescue and drank it up. His wife Parvati then held his throat tightly to prevent the poison from spreading to the rest of his body and killing him. Narada held his mouth so that he did not vomit it out. The poison remained in his throat, making it blue in colour. For this reason, Shiva is also called Neelakantha, or "the blue-thorated one". Nanjanagud literally means "the place where Nanjundeshwara resides."

Nanjundeshwara Temple

The town is famous because of the huge temple dedicated to Lord Nanjundeswara also referred to as Srikanteswara. It is believed that sage Gauthama stayed here for some time and installed a Lingam, the idol form of Shiva. Nanjangud is also known as Dakshina Kashi or Varanasi of the South.

The temple was originally built by the Ganga rulers in the 9th century during their occupation of this region. The residing deity of the temple was later called Hakim Nanjunda; as given by the Tippu Sultan as it is said a favorite elephant of his was cured after prayer was offered to the deity. The same story is attributed to Hyder too ( as per Mysore Gazetteer)! It is said and inscribed in the temple history that his favourite and beloved elephant was bestowed with eyesight by the Lord, after Tippu Sultan's vow with the local deity. The Sultan then had a Lingam made of jade along with an emerald necklace and donated it to the temple. The Vaidya Nanjundeswara, even today is said to be a healer for his believers, and one can see even today worshippers doing Urulu seve, a ritualistic practice after taking bath in the Kapila river.

Twice every year thousands of worshippers gather for the famous Chariot Festival locally known as the Dodda Jathre and the Chikka Jathre. Idols of Lord Srikanteshwara, Goddess Parvathi, Lord Ganapathi, Lord Subramanya and Lord Chandikeshwara are kept in five separate chariots and a traditional puja is performed to the idols early in the morning on the Jathre day. After the puja chariots are flagged off. Thousands of devotees pull the Chariots carved out of wood, across the streets of the old town. The town remains immersed in festivities on the Jathre days.

The very famous Sree Srikanteshwara Suprabhata Stotram was composed by Veda Brahma. Turuvekere Subrahmanya Vishweshwara Dikshith also known as Sri. T. S. Vishweshwara Dikshith. Veda. Brahma. T. S. Vishweshwara Dikshith was born in Turuvekere, a small town in Tumkur district and was the Sanskrit professor in Maharaja Sanskrit College in the Royal Kingdom of Mysore and resided at Mysore. He was also the Aasthana Vidwan of Alankaara Shasthra of King Jayachamaraja Wodeyar Bahadur. Sri. T. S. Vishweshwara Dikshith was a learned Sanskrit scholar in several Vedas (Yajur Veda in particular) and specialised in Ghana Krama - which is the essence of the Vedas. He also composed the Sree Sharada Suprabhata and Sree Chandramoulishwara Suprabhata of Sri Sharada temple, Shringeri and Sri Chandramoulishwara temple in V. V. Mohalla, Mysore respectively. He was a Ghana Pati and had mastered several Shastras such as Alankara Shastra, Jyothishya Shastra (Astrology), Tarka, and Vyakarana (Literature) to name a few. He received several awards and accolodates from the Maharaja of Mysore, and their holiness the pointiffs' of Sringeri Sharada Peetham and Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam respectively for his contributions made to Sanskrit Literature.

Getting There

 By Road

From the state capital Bangalore, one can take the State Highway 17 which goes to Mysore and then onwards to Nanjangud. The total distance from Bangalore to Nanjangud is around 163 km. Another route is about 30 km from Mysore, which takes 30 minutes by road.

 By Rail

Nanjangud has a railway station with broad gauge line (the standard gauge followed by Indian Railways) which runs from Mysore to Nanjangud. Mysore being an important location is well connected by rail to major cities in India and hence passengers can stop over at Mysore and take another train to reach Nanjangud. There is also a proposal to connect the railway line at Chamarajanagar to the railway line at Mettupalayam in Tamil Nadu which will provide connectivity between Nanjangud and other cities in south India.

The gauge conversion of the railway track from Mysore to Chamarajanagar has been completed.

 By air

The nearest airport is the one at Bangalore. Alternatively one can use the airports at Coimbatore or Calicut for reaching Nanjangud. However, the airport at Mysore is being upgraded which can then be used to reach Nanjangud

Bandhavgarh National Park

IUCN Category II (National Park)

Location Madhya Pradesh, India
Nearest city Umaria
Area 437 km²
Established 1968

Governing body Madhya Pradesh Forest Department

Bandhavgarh National Park (Devanagari: बांधवगढ राष्ट्रीय उद्दान) is one of the popular national parks in India located in the Umaria district of Madhya Pradesh. Bandhavgarh was declared a national park in 1968 with an area of 105 km². The buffer is spread over the forest divisions of Umaria and Katni and totals 437 km². The park derives its name from the most prominent hillock of the area, which is said to be given by Hindu Lord Rama to his brother Lakshmana to keep a watch on Lanka (Ceylon). Hence the name Bandhavgarh (Sanskrit: Brother's Fort).

This park has a large biodiversity. The density of the tiger population at Bandhavgarh is one of the highest known in India. The park has a large breeding population of Leopards, and various species of deer. Maharaja Sachin Singh Baghel of Rewa captured a white tiger in this region in 1951. This white tiger, Mohan, is now stuffed and on display in the palace of the Maharajas of Rewa.

The Famous Tigers of Bandhavgarh

Bandhavgarh has the highest density of Bengal tigers known in the world, and is home to some famous named individual tigers. Charger, an animal so named because of his habit of charging at elephants and tourists (whom he nonetheless did not harm), was the first healthy male known to be living in Bandhavgarh since the 1990s. A female known as Sita, who once appeared on the cover of National Geographic and is considered the most photographed tiger in the world,[citation needed] was also to be found in Bandhavgarh for many years. Most of the tigers of Bandhavgarh today are descendants of Sita and Charger.

Another female, known as Mohini, became prominent following Sita's death. She gave birth to three cubs: B1; B2; and B3, from whom she was separated in 2003 following a vehicle accident and an incident in which tourists separated her from the cubs. She later died of her wounds from the vehicle accident.

Charger died in 2002. Between 2003 and 2006 his family met with a series of unfortunate ends. B1 was electrocuted and B3 was killed by poachers. Sita was killed by poachers. Mohini died of serious wounds to her body. The fully grown B2 survived as the dominant male in the forest between 2004 and 2007, mating with a female in the Siddhubaba region of Bandhavgarh and fathering three cubs. One of them was a male. This new male was first sighted in 2008 and is now Bandhavgarh's dominant male; however, one of his daughters has been known to mate with another male tiger who is likely to challenge B2's son for the crown.

Apart from the avatars, well worth seeing are three small temples of around the 12th century. These temples are deserted but the fort is still used as a place of worship. Kabir Das, the celebrated 16th century saint, once lived and preached here. The natural ramparts of the fort give breathtaking view of the surrounding countryside. Vultures wheel around the precipice which also attracts blue rock thrushes and crag martins. The fort still belongs to the Maharaja of Rewa and permission is required to visit it. However permission is available locally and no trip to Bandhavgarh is complete without making an effort to climb up the fort. HESARAGHATTA-APRIL2010

HESARAGHATTA - APRIL 2010

I along with my fellow photographer Mr. Vishwanath visited the Hesaraghatta Lake, Outskirts of Bangalore on 14th April 2010, we captured birds like Common Kestrel, Eurasian Marsh Harrier, Green Bea Eater,Drongo, Bulbul etc

Hesaraghatta Lake

Hesaraghatta Lake (Kannada: ಹೆಸರಘಟ್ಟ ಕೆರೆ) is a manmade reservoir located 18 km to the northeast of Bangalore in Karnataka state, India. It is a fresh water lake created in the year 1894 across the Arkavathy River to meet the drinking water needs of the city. Sir.K.Seshadri Iyer, the then Dewan of erstwhile Mysore state and the then Chief Engineer of Mysore, M.C.Hutchins, planned to build the scheme called the “Chamarajendra Water Works” to store a three-years' water supply to the city.

The Lake is approachable by road from Bangalore at a distance of 26.5 km to the northwest of the City .

Avifauna

Kingfisher in the Lake areaEven in the deteriorated condition of the lake, birds such as the kingfisher (Halcyon smyrnensis), magpie robin (Copsychus saularis), little egrets, common mynas (Acridotheres tristis), Brahminy kites, black drangos, bulbuls, greater coucals, purple sunbirds, etc., (some are pictured in the gallery.) have been reported in and around the lake periphery. Documented records of sighting of 2000 water birds of 29 species have been reported. The lake is also a great place for the winter migrants. Harriers and Spotted Eagles have been reported from this lake during winter. Bird poaching traps, a common sight, are located and removed from the bed of the lake quite often

Places of interest

The fertile area which encircles the Lake has a number of important institutions such as the Government Aquarium, Horticultural Research Institute, Indo-Danish Poultry and Dairy farms with its livestock breeding and poultry centers which face the Lake, and the famous Nrityagram, the dance village — India's first modern Gurukul (residential school) founded by Odissi danseuse, the late Protima Gauri in 1990.

Ranganathittu-March 2010

RANGANTHITTU-MARCH 2010

I along with fellow Photographer Vishwanath had been to Ranganathittu on 13th March and 14th March 2010 :
The team includes me (Sateesh N), Vishwanath, Umesh and Krishna Rao,

I thank Officials from Forest Dept, Mysore, Sri Nandakumar Forester and Boatman Yogesh.
I came to know that Rivertern had laid 3 eggs and yatched on the 13th March as hearing the news i visited the sanctuary on 14th March 2010 Sunday, I got some good pics of Rivertern feeding young one,

Ranganthittu Bird Sanctuary (Kannada: ರಂಗನತಿಟ್ಟು ಪಕ್ಷಿಧಾಮ) is a Bird Sanctuary in the Mandya District of the state of Karnataka in India. It is a very small sanctuary, being only 67 km². in area, and comprises six islets on the banks of the Kaveri River. Ranganthittu is located near the historic town of Srirangapatna.
The islets came into being when a dam across the Kaveri river was built in the 1700s. The ornithologist Dr. Salim Ali observed that the isles formed an important nesting ground for birds, and persuaded the Wodeyar kings of Mysore to declare the area a wildlife sanctuary in 1940.

Flora

Riverine reed beds cover the banks of the islands, while the islands themselves are covered in broadleaf forests, with dominant species being Terminalia arjun (Arjun tree), bamboo groves, and Pandanus trees. Eucalyptus and Acacia trees have also been planted, which might lead to long-term eradication of native species. The endemic and threatened lily Iphigenia mysorensis of the family Colchicaceae grows in the sanctuary.

Fauna

The islands are host to numerous small mammals, including Bonnet Macaque, colonies of Flying Fox and common small mammals like Common Palm Civet and Indian Gray Mongoose and the monitor lizard.

The Mugger Crocodile or Marsh Crocodile is a common inhabitant of the riverine reed beds. Breeding water birds include Painted Stork, Asian Openbill Stork, Common Spoonbill, Woolly-necked Stork, Black-headed Ibis, White Ibis, Lesser Whistling Duck, Indian Shag, Stork-billed Kingfisher and other common birds like egrets, cormorants, Oriental Darter, and herons. The Great Stone Plover, and River Tern also nest here. The park is home to a large flock of Streak-throated Swallows.

Ranthambore National Park

PHOTOGRAPHY WILDLIFE OUTING TO RANTHAMBORE NATIONAL PARK -
FROM 15TH JAN 2010 TO 18TH JAN 2010

THE TEAM

SATISH H
VISHWANATH.S
SATEESH.N
ARJUN HAARITH

We left Jaipur on 15th Jan 2010 by MaruSagar Expresee by 10.20 am and reached Sawai Madhopur by 12-45 afternoon. We had booked the Safari trips through online by http://www.rajasthanwildlife.in/ (for further enquiries clarifications anyone can connect to the website or email to ranthambore@rajasthanwildlife.in.)

First trip in the Afternoon of 15th Jan 2010, We had Alloted Route No. 4 :

This route has beautiful lakes of Ranthambore.

The three big lakes - Padam Talab (meaning Lake), Malik Talab and Raj Bagh are the water bodies providing life to the fauna of the park and to the aquatic vegetation like lotus, lilies and duckweeds. Chambal River in the north, Banas River in the south and around six artificial lakes are some of the other water bodies in the Ranthambore. The national park remains open for tourists, between the months of October and June. Apart from the Royal Bengal Tiger, the park is a haven for large number of other animals and birds, which also fall a prey to Tiger.

They are : Rajbagh Lake.,

Rajbagh is the second largest lake among the three lakes in Ranthambore. Rajbagh Talao has whippings that protract to the bulge of the lake. The water plants in the lake offer the mud deer with indolence to tickle on. Tigers can rarely be seen near Rajbagh Talao.

Padam Talao :is is the largest of the lakes present in the park. The famous and beautiful Jogi Mahal is located at the very edge of this lake. When in season, the water lilies that give the lake it's name, can be seen in plenty. In the early hours of the morning and just before sunset, animals can be seen in large numbers on the lake side. It is in the shallow waters of this lake that the famous "lake hunters" of Ranthambore operate, the most legendary of which was the tiger, Genghis. It is also along this lake's edges that the rare sighting of the chinkara is most probable

Mallik Talao

The Safari on Route no.3 was worth that day, as we took pictures of Sambhars , treepies , Bar headed geese etc., with some landscapes too. According to me route 3 is one of the best routes in the park.

In the Rajbagh Lake we shot some pics of Sambar and some species of Birds and then moved towards Mallik Talau here we captured Bar Headed Goose and Brahmini Ducks, Hoopoe, and friendly bird like Treepie's

16th Jan 2010- Day 2 (Morning Trip No-2) : Alloted Route no 4 Guide:

We found Chitals & Sambars. After shooting pictures of the sighted some species of birds, we had to returned back empty handed (I mean not much of shooting the pics)

Day 2 (Evening Trip No-3) : Alloted Route No 4: Guide:

In the afternoon, it was lucky. we were shooting some birds like brahmni ducks, cormonant, and Sambars near Mallik talao in route 4, suddenly a gypsy, far away place gave us a signal, our gypsy driver went there in a moment. And we were amazed to witness a royal tigress sitting in a bush. It was T-17. After 30 mins, it came out of the bush and followed the path along with the gypsies.

After a while the tigress waited patiently to hunt a sambar, nearly for 15-20 mts, but at certain point of time an alarm call was heard and sambars took to their heels. After the majesticanimal's sighting we returned back.

Day 3 (Morning Trip No.4) Alloted Route No. 2: Guide :Mr. Salim Ali.: As soon as we entered the Entry Gate, a gigantic Nilgai was in the road, we had to remove the camera, till then it was on the road, we shoot some pics of nilgai and moved forward in search of sigthing, after a while, suddenly a male tiger came out of the bush. It was T-23 male.

Day 3 (Evening Trip No. 5) Alloted Route No. 1

The Route was backside of the Fort Area, where we found nothing but Wild Boars and Languors

Day 4 (Morning Trip No. 6) Alloted Route No. 5

This was the second last safari of our trip. It was very cold in the morning. It was a fog hit day. We got up the gypsy and went inside the forest, we heard alarm calls given by Chitals and Langurs, suddenly the beautiful queen T-17 appeared on the road. We went through the mist under a very less viewing distance due to the mist. The entire forest area was covered under the clouds when we went up hill atop. After a Break near Forest Guards Room and continued the safari... After that we drove further, went up the hill and our gypsy got struck on hill for few minutes, later our Driver Bhaiyya managed and we came back we had a nice safari and took few landscape pictures including the Human Friendly TREEPIE Bird. after lunch in our hotel we had a nice sightings of birds including Kingfisher, Hoopoe,Red Vented Bulbul, Spotted Owlet etc we had a nice afternoon after lunch

Day 4 ( Evening Trip No. 7) Alloted Route No 4 :

It is a highlight to see the Tigers in their natural habitat and multiple safari's might be necessary.

Ranthambore National Park is one of the top places to see a tiger in its natural environment in India. The usual way of spotting a tiger is to take a jeep safari though the park. However, lately visitors haven't had to go looking for tigers in Ranthambore. They've been venturing so close to the edge of the park that guests have been able to see them from their hotels.

This is taken to be a good sign in terms of the tiger population at the park as tigers are territorial, and apparently venture out of the core area in search of space and prey.

As a Gist of our Tour We had sighted following gigantic animal of Ranthombore and Various Species of Birds

15.01.10 – Route # 3
16.01.10 – Route # 4 (sighted T17 & T 28)

Description:

RANTHAMBORE NATIONAL PARK : is one of the prime examples of Project Tiger’s conservation efforts in Rajasthan. The forests around the Ranthambore Fort were once, the private hunting grounds of the Maharajas of Jaipur. The desire to preserve the game in these forests for sport, was responsible for their conservation, and subsequent rescue by Project Tiger. The Park sprawls over an estimated area of 400 sq kms. Steep crags embrace a network of lakes and rivers, and a top one of these hills, is the impressive Ranthambore Fort, built in the 10th century. The terrain fluctuates between impregnable forests and open bushland. The forest is the typically dry deciduous type, with dhok, being the most prominent tree. The entry point to the Park, goes straight to the foot of the fort and the forest rest house, Jogi Mahal. The latter boasts of the second-largest banyan tree in India. The Padam Talab, the Raj Bagh Talab and the Malik Talab are some of the lakes in the area, that attract the tiger population. They have been spotted at the edges of these lakes, and Jogi Mahal itself. Old crumbling walls, ruined pavilions, wells, and other ancient structures stand witness to the region's glorious past. The entire forest is peppered with the battlements and spillovers of the Ranthambore Fort - tigers are said to frequent these ruins, too. As a result of stringent efforts in conservation, tigers, the prime assets of the Park, have become more and more active during the day. More than in any other park or sanctuary in India, tigers are easily spotted here in daylight. They can be seen lolling around lazily in the sun, or feverishly hunting down Sambar around the lakes.

In the afternoon, This is also one of the most beautiful routes of Ranthambhore. Before the Forest Check Point enroute to safari, we found plumhead parakeets, While driving, the driver noticed few pug marks. We waited for a while and again T-17 appeared. On the D-Day of our Safari (I mean the last trip), it was T-17 gave darshan and walked besides our Gypsy and then took a turn and went towards other area not belonging to T-17. That was an amazing experience, The Sighting and Lighting for our Photographs was one of the best.

Mt. Kailash Manasarovar Holy Yatra

Where the Heaven meets the Earth

The trip of a lifetime...or many lifetimes -An Ultimate & A Blissful Yatra

"Conventional wisdom says a single circuit of Mt. Kailash wipes out the sins of a lifetime, 108 parikramas guarantees enlighttenment. A ritual bath in the sacred Manasa Sarovar lake will deliver a pilgrim to Brahma's paradise and a drop drink of its water relinquishes the sins of hundred lifetimes."

"There are no mountains like the Himalaya, for in them are Kailash and Mansarovar. As the dew is dried up by the morning Sun, so are the sins of mankind dried up by the sight of the Himalaya." -Skanda Puran

Mount Kailash is a peak in the Gangdisê mountains which is part of the Himalayas in Tibet, the source of some of the longest rivers in Asia—the Indus River, the Sutlej River, a tributary of the Indus River, and the Brahmaputra River—and is considered as a sacred place in four religions—Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Bön faith. In Hindu religion, it is considered to be the abode of Lord Shiva. The mountain lies near Lake Manasarowar and Lake Rakshastal in Tibet.

There have been no recorded attempts to climb Mount Kailash; it is considered off limits to climbers in deference to Buddhist and Hindu beliefs. It is the most significant peak in the world that has not seen any known climbing attempts.
The word Kailāśā means "crystal" in Sanskrit. The Tibetan name for the mountain is Gangs Rin-po-che, meaning "precious jewel of snows". Another local name for the mountain is Tisé Mountain. In the Jain tradition, the mountain is referred to as Ashtapada.

Religious significance : In Hinduism
According to Hinduism, Shiva, the destroyer of evil and sorrow, resides at the summit of a legendary mountain named Kailāśā, where he sits in a state of perpetual meditation along with his wife Pārvatī, the daughter of Himalaya. Kubera, the god of wealth was also said to have his abode on or near the mountain.

This Kailāśā is regarded in many sects of Hinduism as paradise, the ultimate destination of souls and the spiritual center of the world. Some traditions also aver that the mountain is Shiva's linga and Lake Manasarowar below is the yoni of His consort. According to one description in the Vishnu Purana, Mount Kailash is the center of the world, its four faces are made of crystal, ruby, gold, and lapis lazuli. It is the pillar of the world; is 84,000 leagues high; is the center of the world mandala; and is located at the heart of six mountain ranges symbolizing a lotus. The four rivers flowing from Kailash then flow to the four quarters of the world and divide the world into four regions.

The largest and most important rock-cut temple, Kailash Temple at Ellora,Maharashtra is named after Mount Kailash. Many of its sculptures and reliefs depict episodes relating to Shiva and Parvati, including the demon Ravana's attempt to dislodge them by shaking Mount Kailash.
